Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.

No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
