Early trials indicate it could assist individuals reduce up to 25% of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed online as the successor to Ozempic.

However, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unlicensed medication in the UK is worrisome and could result in users administering products of uncertain source.

Some professionals stated the demand for retatrutide could be connected to the increasing cost of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Implementation

Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be promoted or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Several influencers attempt to circumvent the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but promotion and distribution can still violate medicines, advertising, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to fines, legal action or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Material Removal

Based on TikTok, the platform has taken down violative material and banned related keywords and query recommendations. The organization said it was dedicated to keeping the service safe and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Online Trading Activities

Investigations also found communities with up to 9,000 members selling the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated search feature, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with thousands of users, populated with images of weight loss, positive testimonials and detailed guides for preparing or injecting at home.

After moments of joining one group, a seller shared contact information, where the majority of purchases take place. The seller sent an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within two days. When asked whether the product was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one inquired about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Product Information and Costs

Inside these groups, messages show dark colored packages with Royal Mail labels, stating to include fresh supplies. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between powder vials, prepared at home with sterile water, or pre-filled pens typically sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how long a injector should last, vendors give conflicting responses ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Measures

A spokesperson for Telegram stated it actively moderated harmful content on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Cautions

“Individuals are administering materials they can’t verify. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these online versions may not contain what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to recent cost increases for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are turning to social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she said.

Her team has already encountered individuals injured by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Statement

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental substance not yet authorized … may expose users to possibly serious health risks”.
